A blog encouraging young men to get into the medical field. What I Wish They Told Me When I Was Younger
With all the changes going on in the medical field, it can be hard to know how to get started in the industry if you’re interested in pursuing it as a career. A lot of people struggle with this, whether they’re just getting out of high school or just about to graduate from college. However, many good things come to those who wait, and in your case, waiting just means putting the necessary time and effort into your studies before you graduate or complete an internship or training program.
Dedicate yourself
In any industry, especially medicine, dedication is key. From taking extra classes and training to working long hours, anything worth doing takes some hard work. There are no shortcuts to success. If you want to succeed in medicine, don’t take shortcuts; make sacrifices and go above and beyond what’s expected of you every day. This will ensure that when you reach your goals it won’t be by chance—you worked for it.
Don’t compare yourself to others
It’s a mistake to compare yourself to others, because everyone has different experiences. What looks easy for someone else might be difficult for you, and vice versa. You never know how long someone has been working toward their goals or what struggles they’ve gone through along the way. Be patient with yourself, keep an open mind and find support if you need it. Take advice from people who have been in your shoes before you—their advice is always invaluable!
Do what you love
Too many young people go to college thinking they’ll just figure out what they want to do later on. Later on never comes. Instead, discover what you’re interested in and pursue it with everything you have. You might find yourself not only happier in your career, but much more successful as well.
Read
If you want to be a doctor, you need to read up on medicine. Read blogs, books and medical journals; find out what’s interesting about medicine that interests you, or perhaps work at a local clinic for some hands-on experience. The more information you have, the better prepared and more excited about your future career in medicine you’ll be.
Exercise your mind
There’s a good chance that medical school is one of your top choices because you want to help people. And by volunteering or working part-time in a healthcare setting, you can gain experience and earn money while doing it! If you don’t have any experience already, now is the time to start getting some.
Stop overthinking school debt
Believe it or not, more than a few people decide to get into medical school for all of the wrong reasons. Before you start sending in applications, think about why you want to pursue a career in medicine. Although helping others is an admirable pursuit, don’t forget that becoming a doctor is also extremely challenging—and getting through school will require lots of hard work and dedication.
